Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster final round of competition.
Rai sank a crucial birdie from around eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory over Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
Rai started the last day with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last hole.
Playoff Decider
That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more person. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Contenders
The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to do, coming up one shot short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
