“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, explained the property was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings triggered the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno stated to the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the incident comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor believed the explosion had taken place on a level above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the blast, he said officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being activated”.
