Jennifer Lawrence States Discussing Trump Would ‘Worsen the Situation’ That’s Ripping the Nation Apart
The star has revealed that she finds it inappropriate appropriate to speak out against the Trump presidency, worried it could worsen polarizing arguments and further divisions across the country.
‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Says the Actress
During a discussion, Lawrence shared, “When Trump was first in office, I felt like I was moving hastily in a panicked state. But it’s become clear, over multiple voting cycles, Hollywood stars have no real impact in any way on electoral choices.”
The actor went on, “What’s the point? I’m just expressing personal views on an issue that’s going to worsen tensions that’s ripping the nation apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Jennifer Lawrence has spoken candidly about voting for both Republican and Democratic presidential nominees over the years. Brought up by Republican parents in Kentucky, she cast her ballot for the Republican nominee in the 2008 election before joining the left-leaning politics and revealing she recognized during Obama’s administration that supporting the GOP was voting against her individual liberties as a woman.
Past Statements
In 2015, she commented that a Trump victory would be “a disaster” and publicly supported the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. During the most recent election, she lent her support to Vice President Harris, “because I believe she’s an amazing candidate and I trust that she will make every effort to safeguard women’s health rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
The star was supported by most of Hollywood in her disapproval of the former president as a candidate for re-election, but the limited influence public figures have over the voting intentions was highlighted by his election win.
“This upcoming term seems distinct,” noted Lawrence regarding Trump’s presidency. “Because he said what he was going to do. We knew what he did for four years. He was transparent. And that’s the option selected.”
Current Projects
The actor is highlighting Die, My Love, the filmmaker’s drama in which she plays a new mother who faces challenges with her psychological well-being in a remote area. During a press conference for the movie in the film festival, the star commented on the situation in the Middle East: “I feel fear. It’s horrifying. What’s occurring is nothing short of a genocide and it’s awful.”
Additional Thoughts
Lawrence added by stating that she was saddened by “the hostility in the discourse of the political landscape currently and how that is going to be normalised to the younger generation today. It’s going to be typical to them that leaders are untruthful.”
She sought to redirect outrage about the situation to decision-makers rather than celebrities. “Keep attention on those accountable,” she advised, in what many took to be a reference to the recent commitment signed by numerous Hollywood professionals to avoid certain cultural organizations.
Personal Connections
The actor, who earned critical acclaim at a young age for her role in her breakout movie, is receiving praise for her portrayal in the new film. Even though the director has denied the narrative being understood as one of post-birth struggles and mental illness, Lawrence said that she identified with parts of her role’s experience after the arrival of her youngest child, soon after filming concluded.
“I felt anxiety for my son,” she explained, “imagining every potential danger, and then second-guessing everything that I was doing. I was receiving counseling, but I got on a medication called the prescription and I continued it for a short period and it really helped.”
Career Moments
Lawrence also discussed about the liberating necessity of filming without clothes in the project while she was some months pregnant and couldn’t work out.
“There’s a freedom,” she remarked, regarding the need to set aside self-consciousness. “Truly, I sometimes think where I’m like, What separates me between my work and that profession? But it doesn’t keep me up at night.”
