The former official declared he would withdraw from public roles after House committee disclosed his regular correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a series of emails between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became publicly available.

The economist commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate observing their advancement".

The prominent academic, who previously presided over the prestigious university, stated on recently that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed communications demonstrated that Summers communicated with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for accused trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected the economist's decision to step down.

"We value his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he provided to the governing body," the company stated.

Legislative Background

This news comes after the entire Congress of the US legislature agreed on Tuesday to approve a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will afterward move to the desk of President Trump for approval. Trump has stated he expects to sign the bill, after modifying his view on the issue following objections from his base.

A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the Congressional committee recently included multiple high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The communications revealed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to link the official to influential international personalities.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, Summers said he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised judgment to maintain communicating with Mr Epstein".

He continued that he desired "to rebuild trust and fix connections with the persons nearest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers held senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He headed the university from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public duties previously on this week, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in DC where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that the economist was no longer connected with the organization.

Summers joined the directorate of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
